This recognition honors IRPI's ongoing commitment to investigative journalism and the defense of press freedom — especially when carried out under pressure, in high-risk contexts, and in defiance of attempts at censorship.
Along with exiled Rwandan journalist Charles Kabonero, IRPI — and its online publication IRPI Media — was recognised for their cross-border investigations exposing corruption, organised crime, and abuse of power. The universities highlight its role in shedding light on complex transnational issues that many would rather see hidden. The jury sees the work of both Kabonero and IRPI as powerful symbols in the fight against repression and disinformation.

Difference Day is an annual event in Brussels that celebrates World Press Freedom Day, proclaimed by the UN in 1993. Since 2015, VUB, ULB, IHECS, Erasmushogeschool Brussel, BOZAR, and the Evens Foundation — in partnership with leading media and academic organisations and also Journalismfund Europe — have brought together institutions and citizens to celebrate the right to speak freely and to listen respectfully.
This year marks the 11th edition, taking place on May 2nd, 2025 at BOZAR – The Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels. The event includes debates, exhibitions, film screenings, and media literacy sessions. All held under the motto: “Speak freely, listen respectfully – different opinions matter.”
