BERLIN - FairPlanet's project is a research-led innovation sprint designed to refine its digital platform strategy, amplify diverse local journalism and explore sustainable revenue models. Based on participatory design and audience engagement, the project aims to create a more inclusive, resilient and impactful media outlet in the long term.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
FairPlanet is a digital journalism platform committed to highlighting local stories with global relevance relating to climate justice and human rights. With the support of this grant, we co-designed a participatory research project to enhance FairPlanet’s understanding of its impact, strengthen its platform and guarantee its long-term sustainability within an increasingly fragile media landscape. This work included developing a theory of change prototype, conducting stakeholder mapping and designing a roadmap to guide future strategic decisions.

Ultimately, the project links FairPlanet’s ambitious mission with more specific, practical pathways to change.
Over the course of eight weeks, we will conduct interviews with journalists and audiences, co-design solutions, test platform prototypes and explore new funding models. The outcome will be a research-backed strategy, an updated platform roadmap and an open-source case study to assist other newsrooms in overcoming similar challenges.

GOALS OF THE PROJECT

  • Develop a clear theory of change that connects daily work with systemic impact.
  • Find ways to better support and amplify the voices of FairPlanet’s global network of journalists.
  • Understand audience needs to improve engagement and platform usability.
  • Design a practical research plan to test assumptions, refine strategy and support decision-making.
  • Strengthen the sustainability of FairPlanet’s business model by developing an insight-driven strategy.
