The mounting environmental and economic turmoil disrupting agriculture makes a shift towards sustainable food production urgent. Against this backdrop, new gene-edited, patentable crops (NGTs) are being promoted by agricultural chemical companies as an environmentally friendly solution. The industry claims that strict biotech regulations are preventing their supercrops from reaching their sustainability potential. However, critics argue that these green promises are unfounded and warn that patented, uniform seeds will erode farmer autonomy and biodiversity. With the EU set to follow the US, Canada and Japan in deregulating biotech crops, our investigation aims to reveal what lies behind the push for deregulating lab-tweaked seeds and the potential impact on European farming sectors, plant breeders, and our already fragile environments and biodiversity.
